Sunday School and Adult Formation Classes begin Sunday, August 16 at 9:30 AM. Breakfast is served in the Dining Room that day from 8:45 to 9:30. We will all leave breakfast for our classrooms at 9:30.
Sunday Mornings for Adults
Equipping the Saints is our lecture and discussion class that now meets in Room 215, on the upper level of Heyward Hall. Led by the Adult Formation committee and the clergy, the class is made of several different topics throughout the year. We begin with Genesis as Revelation of Jesus Christ.
The Wired Word now meets in the Library on the first floor of Heyward Hall. Discussion-oriented, this class works off lessons emailed to participants in advance, that provoke reflection on Scripture, current events, and our common life. Faith at Home has moved to the Parlor on the main level of Heyward Hall. Coordinated by our Director of Family Ministries, Lynae Beresford, this class considers Christian faith in the home and often around issues of raising children. It begins with the reading of Habits of the Household: Practicing the Story of God in Everyday Family Rhythms by Justin Whitmel Earley, available in the atrium and at the first meeting.
The Monthly Sunday Early Adult Class meets monthly, of course, usually on the first Sunday of the month, at 9 AM in the Dining Room of the Barr Center. It is a great choice for 8 AM service worshipers. Davis Bourne leads the class and provides a delicious breakfast. It takes up “The Exodus Story,” which recounts God’s claim of Israel as His people out of slavery in Egypt. Join us in learning about the nature of God’s mercy, human freedom, and the relationship between God and humanity.
Sunday Mornings for Children
For children 5th grade and under, parents please plan to walk your child to class and pick your child up from the door at 10:15.
Little Lambs, for 3 and 4 year olds, is faithfully led by Ashley Jaillette, Kelli Turnipseed, and Caroline Tevepaugh in Room 129. Our youngest parishioners engage in play, story, song, and craft as they learn about the Bible.
Shining Stars, this class is our K-2 class and it meets in room 226. It is led by Sally McCants, Lolly Petroff, and Ted Belsches. This year we will explore and engage in Bible stories through story, play with interactive and hands-on learning.
Seeking Shepherds, our class for our 3rd-5th graders and it has moved to room 227. It is led by three families: the McCauleys, the Colemans, and the Plylers. Following the lectionary, this class will begin to deepen the connection between the Gospel lesson and their everyday lives.
Middle School: 6th-8th graders learn from Barbara and Bobby Jones through the Bible Project video series, traveling together through the Old and New Testament. Be ready to have your thinking caps on for some competitive trivia! Room 221.
High Schoolers are invited to come to room 222 during the Sunday School hour. We will spend time diving deeper into the Gospel readings for each Sunday.
Children’s Chapel at St. John’s is a beloved tradition of storytelling, prayer, and song. Before the Gospel at the 10:30 worship service, children ages 7 and under are invited to join an adult at the back of the church to walk to the Children’s Chapel and enjoy a child-focused worship time. We’ll spend our time hearing a story, praying, and singing songs! Each week Children’s Chapel by one of our dedicated leaders. Parents of participating children are encouraged to sign up throughout the year to serve as “class assistants” to be an additional helper in the room.
Nursery is offered at St. John’s for children ages 3 and younger. The children of St. John’s enjoy playtime in a safe and loving environment from 9:20 until the end of the later worship service. Parents are welcome to pick up their children anytime during the service. Parents of children who participate in Nursery are encouraged to be in the rotation of volunteers. We are also thankful for our wonderful nursery staff members who serve each week.
