As rector (lead priest), Nicholas leads worship weekly and preaches about three Sundays a month. He also teaches in Bible studies and adult formation and provides pastoral care. He marries, buries, and baptizes and helps people get ready for those things. Nicholas is the head of staff and chairs the vestry (our governing board), sharing with those groups and many other committees and teams responsibility for guiding the ministry of St. John’s. He hopes to be more involved in the wider community as time goes by, helping St. John’s continue its traditions of community engagement as followers of Jesus Christ. He loves to think with others about the Christian life and grow in it with them.
Garrett is delighted to be welcomed into the life of St. John’s. Ordained deacon in June of 2022, he preaches, teaches, and works in the intersection of between the gifts of the church and the needs of the world. As Assistant Rector, Garrett coordinates with the Rector concerning pastoral care, and hopes to bring particular gifts in formation by drawing attention to the ethical life of scripture. He holds an MDiv. from Virginia Theological Seminary and an MLitt from the Institute for Theology, Imagination, and the Arts at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He is a native of Columbia, SC, a fan of every type of jazz, and every iteration of Spider-Man.
The Rev. Alex Barron served parishes in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida, and as a chaplain in the United States Navy before his retirement. He is native of Rock Hill and a graduate of Sewanee and now makes his home at Still Hopes with his wife Margie. He serves in a part-time role as Priest Associate.
Rhonda Gardner is our Finance Administrator for St. John’s. Rhonda’s responsibilities consist of preparing Sunday offering and miscellaneous receipt deposits, posting donations to individual parish member records and preparing contribution statements. Rhonda pays all invoices, processes payroll, pays and files federal and state taxes. She works closely with the church treasurer and prepares monthly financial reports as well as other detailed reports to track trends and analysis for the Finance Ministry Team, Vestry and Stewardship Committee. Rhonda also directs and assists in budget preparation and its overall process. She is the contact for all financial inquiries, both internally and externally.
As Director of Music Ministries at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Dr. Michael T. Brown selects music for Sunday services, directs the St. John’s Chancel Choir and the St. John’s Singers (our youth choir), and regularly collaborates with other staff members on special events and services which may involve music. He believes very strongly that every one of God’s people has a voice that is worthy of discovery and development, and that through the correct guidance, with faith and perseverance, everyone is capable of learning how to sing, and should be encouraged to raise their voices in praise of God.
Michael completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance at the University of South Carolina in 2018. He also holds a Masters degree in Vocal Pedagogy from the Catholic University of America and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Gordon College. Before moving to South Carolina, he taught music at the French International School in Bethesda, MD for seven years, performed in the greater DC area, and was involved with the music ministry at St. James Episcopal Church in Potomac, MD. In 2017 he was the recipient of a USC SPARC grant to support research into the life and work of mid-19th century Parisian singer/composer/director Delphine Ugalde.
Laura Fowles is our Parish Administrator for St. John’s. Laura’s responsibilities consist of oversight of day-to-day church operations including facilities and technology needs.
Laura will work closely with our church vendors, service contracts, facility management, sexton supervision, purchasing, non-profit groups, and support for parish events. Building these relationships will benefit both the church and parish moving forward. The Fowles family have been members of St. John’s for over 80 years.
Megan Griffin joined the St. John’s staff in 2019 and is the office’s administrative assistant. She helps coordinate various avenues of communications, office supplies and keeping the chocolate jar full. Megan is also your go-to person for membership needs and questions. Whether it’s by phone, email or in the office, she is happy to help in any way she can to support St. John’s ministries.
Alex is our Director of Family Ministries at St. John’s. She recently graduated from the University of South Carolina and is excited to begin her post-grad life at St. John’s. She served as a family ministries intern for a year before stepping into the Director role. Alex has been part of this diocese her whole life and is excited to help the children and youth of St. John’s grow in their faith and make lasting memories.
