Family Ministries

Children, Newborn to 5th Grade

The nursery is provided for infants to three-year-olds during the 10:30 am Sunday service. The nursery is also available during the Sunday school hour throughout the school year and is staffed by a rotating volunteer team and two paid workers. To join the nursery team, please contact the Director of Family Ministries.

Children’s Sunday School
Children’s Sunday School is offered for children beginning at the 3k grade level through 5th grade. These classes meet during the 9:30-10:15 Sunday School time from September to May.

Special Programs
Special programs are offered throughout the year to build community and explore faith traditions. Please look in the bulletin and the weekly Epistle for special programs such as Vacation Bible School, Feast of Lights & 12th Night Party, Easter Egg Hunt, Children’s Choir, Third Sunday Squad, Trunk or Treat, and Advent Programs.

Vacation Bible School
Three year olds through rising 4th graders are welcome to attend Vacation Bible School (VBS) in June. Adults and older youth serve as volunteers, and children experience the Bible and Jesus in a fun, casual atmosphere with age-appropriate activities.

New Baby Ministry
This ministry provides encouragement and support to families with new babies. The families are provided with a gift basket and information about baptisms and special prayers for parents of newborns.

Children’s Chapel
Children’s Chapel is offered for children in 3K to 5K.  Throughout the year, this group meets during part of 10:30 am Sunday service.  During the sequence hymn, children follow the cross down the aisle and are led to the Children’s Chapel room. They are taught Bible stories, the Gospel lesson and Episcopal traditions at an age appropriate level. The children return to the service during the Peace. To join the rotating team of leaders, contact the Director of Family Ministries.

6th Grade to 12th Grade

Confirmation and Inquirer’s Classes are offered during the months prior to the Bishop’s visit to St. John’s for confirmation. This class is designed for anyone in the 11th grade, 17 years old, or older who would like to know more about Christianity and the Episcopal Church and make a mature public affirmation of their faith and relationship with God.

Youth Sunday School
Sunday School classes for youth are offered each week in room “356”, named because of the focus verse of Proverbs 3:5-6. Students participate in a variety of fun and interesting discussions and activities focused on fellowship, and scripture, and growing in their walk with Christ.

Youth Christian Formation
EYC, our Episcopal Youth Community, is made up of our middle and high school students in grades 6 through 12.  This ministry is a place for teenagers to come together for fellowship, fun, and community building while we explore God’s love for us and learn about living lives like Jesus. We seek to develop our walks with Christ through fellowship, devotion, fun games, sharing meals, and serving the community together.  While our primary meeting is on Sunday nights, EYC also encompasses fun programs and events, retreats, Monday morning Bojangle’s meet-ups, mission trips, and other happenings designed to build community and grow our faith.  Youth are also encouraged to participate in Diocesan events and retreats such as New Beginnings, Happening, and the Diocesan Youth Leadership Committee (DYLC).

In its second year kicking off on October 14, this monthly all-area student gathering will be hosted at different Columbia churches on the second Sunday of each month at 5 pm and will serve as EYC that night. All Middle and High schoolers and their friends are invited, and the time will include activities and games, group worship, and dinner. We're excited to expand this large group gathering to Columbia this year and continue to build community across our region.
