Finance Ministry

The mission of the Finance Ministry team is to assist and advise the vestry in all financial matters at St. John’s. We seek to establish sound financial controls and practices. We review, analyze and interpret monthly and year-to-date financial data and statements; and, we seek to anticipate financial issues, trends and potential concerns. 

The Finance Ministry team reviews financial controls, policies and procedures and makes appropriate recommendations to the vestry concerning financial matters. We also prepare for and review financial data concerning, the yearly independent audits and/or reviews conducted by an outside audit firm.

The Finance Ministry team is charged with developing an operating budget based on the Fall Stewardship Campaign and the various ministry team requests. It reviews memorial gifts to St. John’s and makes recommendations to the vestry regarding their use.

We are seeking a Finance Administrator to manage the finances of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Shandon. This person will maintain financial records, receive and disperse church funds, prepare periodic financial reports, administer payroll, health insurance and other benefits, and work closely with our vestry, treasurer, staff, as well as, our finance, stewardship and budgeting committees

Located in the Shandon community of Columbia, SC, St. John’s celebrated its Centennial Year in 2012. As one of the strongest parishes in the Diocese of Upper SC, our operating budget of almost $1 million funds more than 10 program and outreach teams as well as salaries for clergy and five administrative and program employees. Our many ministries seek to serve our Lord Jesus Christ and His people. 

The major responsibilities of this position include the following:

·       Prepares deposits from Sunday offerings and miscellaneous receipts. Posts donations to individual records. Reviews and mails quarterly contribution statements.

·       Pays all approved invoices, posting each to the proper budget line.

·       Meets regularly with the church treasurer.

·       Prepares monthly reports for the Finance Committee and Vestry.

·       Monitors the budget and expenditures in all areas.

·       Processes payroll for all employees. Pays and reports all payroll taxes and other liabilities.

·       Effectively manages cash, utilizing Diocesan Investment Account, designated Money Market accounts, and checking account.

·       Processes all stock and other non-cash donations to the church, including valuation and sale of stock gifts.

·       Assists Budget Committee in budget review and development. Provides estimates of non-program expenses and develops various budget scenarios for review.

·       Maintains a fixed asset record.

·       Maintains records of memorial gifts and expenditures.

·       Maintains records pertaining to the memorial garden.

·       Assists Stewardship Committee by providing relevant historical financial information and annual pledge data, when received.

·       Serves as parish contact and provides necessary support during periodic financial audits.

·       Prepares financial information for the annual parochial report.

·       Prepares books, makes all adjusting entries to the general ledger, and executes year-end processing.

Required experience:

  • Three to 5 years accounting experience
  • Proficient with bookkeeping software or church management software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient with relevant computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Excellent analytical ability and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with electronic payroll systems
  • Demonstrated high level of trust and respect for strict confidentiality

Job Type: Part-time

Required education:

  • Associates degree
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred

Salary: Compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience, and assigned responsibilities
