In Memory of William Duval Smith


William Duval Smith, 63, of Lexington, South Carolina, passed away on January 29, 2019 in Austin, Texas at the Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. He was born July 31, 1955 in Columbia, South Carolina, son of the late Sherman Field Smith Jr. and the late Dorothy Duval Brown Smith of Columbia, SC. William was a 1973 graduate of Dreher High School. He received his B.A., B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of South Carolina and his A.A.S.degree in Computer Technology from Midlands Technical College.

He retired in 2013 from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health where he was a computer programmer for 20 years. William was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Shandon (Columbia, SC). William was a talented musician who loved to play his guitar and piano. He recorded his own album in 2000 named "Smithsongs," which was a combination of his vocals and multiple instruments he played including acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and harmonica. He also loved the outdoors, whether he was swimming at North Myrtle Beach or playing in his backyard with his grandchildren.

Willam is survived by his daughter, Meredith Gary-Taylor (David) of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Shannon and Andrew of Lexington, SC; his brothers, Martin of Atlanta, GA and Richard (Novelle) of Columbia, SC; his nieces, Elizabeth (Jamie) of Atlanta GA, Lisa (Tim) of Columbia, SC, and Stella (Travis) of Rock Hill, SC; great nieces and nephews, Daniel of Atlanta, GA, Craig and Grace of Columbia, SC, and Griffin and Jackson of Rock Hill, SC; along with many more family and loved ones. William's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the caring nurses, doctors, and staff at the Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas for their compassion and tireless efforts in his care.

Family will receive guests at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, in Columbia, SC, on Monday, February 4, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will take place at St. John's Episcopal Church in Shandon (Columbia, SC) on February 5, 2019 at 4:00 p.m., and the family will receive guests following the service in the parlor in Heyward Hall.
